Summary:
The GPS Cows learning module will consist of a unit of work spanning 10 weeks (25 hours) where students will collect their own GPS data and analyse existing livestock tracking data sets. The material is strongly aligned with two contexts (Agriculture and Food Technologies and Digital Technologies) in the Stage 4 Technology Mandatory curriculum. Participants will:
- Learn about the history of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and how to use a simple phone app to collect your own data
- Gain an understanding of the science and maths used to make GPS work
- Consider how livestock tracking data can be used in agriculture to improve management decisions on farms
- Examine a case study of a farmer currently trialing GPS tracking devices on their livestock and will access a dataset from this property
- Utilise Excel and ArcGIS online to visualise and analyse livestock tracking data.
